What is studio Pilates?
‘Studio Pilates’ refers to sessions that incorporate the full system of Pilates as it was taught by Joseph Pilates on the large apparatus of his own design, including the Reformer, Cadillac etc.
These sessions are prescriptive in nature and are planned by the teacher based on the needs of the client providing a completely personalised service. Studio sessions are either in a 1:1 private setting with full support, analysis and instruction or in the ‘Open Studio’ or ‘Group Apparatus’ style.
‘Open Studio’ refers to the style used by Mr Pilates to teach multiple clients in his ‘gymnasium’ in Broadway New York. These sessions are not a class as they are still prescriptive and individually planned sessions but with slightly less support from the teacher as there could be up to another 2 other clients maximum in the studio at that time.
Private 1:1 appointments are highly recommended for new clients or those needing analysis and a high level of correction and support. It is common that clients will spend time doing 1:1 sessions at least initially to gain confidence and awareness of the machines and their unique challenges. The idea is then to progress to ‘Open Studio’ if desired as this promotes some self-management over ongoing regular practice. However many prefer to work 1:1 with the teacher ongoing as it is the best way to really enjoy fully personal and supported teaching.
